Case Study: Soupergirl
Soupergirl, started in 2008, strives to provide people the freshest, best quality soup choices for themselves, their community and the planet. They began by delivering to homes and offices; then focused on shipping and catering once they opened their first retail store in 2011. Growth has been impressive; in 2015 they opened their second store and were selected by Whole Foods in 2016. Today, their soups can be found in Whole Foods, Costco, Lidl and Giant stores nationwide.
Last year, Soupergirl faced several label design and production issues their current label vendor could not resolve. The soup labels, due to poor materials and design, were wrinkled and looked terrible on store shelves. Not only were they impacting sales of the product, but Soupergirl knew the brand they had worked so hard to build was being damaged.
Soupergirl got a referral from an equipment supplier they trusted, to contact Graphic Communications (GCI). Due to their previous negative experiences, Soupergirl was initially skeptical, but, after discussions with GCI, realized GCI understood their challenges, had viable solutions to address them and would be an active partner throughout the entire process.
GCI worked closely with Soupergirl to redesign the label shape for a better fit on the container and to identify a label material suited for the temperature ranges experienced with the hot fill and chilling processes. The soup labels are no longer wrinkling and now the packaging matches the quality that Soupergirl wants its products to convey on the store shelves.
To say the results have been impressive is an understatement according to Soupergirl and one of the owners, Sara Polon. She reports the labels “look fantastic” and customers have commented on how they appear cleaner and more professional. Sales are up “big time” compared to the previous fall and Sara knows the improved labels are part of the reason. Soupergirl is now working with GCI on the soup label re-design. She’s excited Soupergirl now has an excellent label manufacturer and feels “very valued” and greatly appreciates the personal service GCI provides.
