New Nutritional Fact Panel Requirements

On January 1, 2020, the requirements for the new nutritional fact panels (NFP) defined by the FDA in 2016 became effective. For the first time since it was implemented in 1994, the FDA has mandated new requirements for this important nutritional label.

Food (with the exception of fruit and vegetables), beverage and other related companies need to be in compliance and these changes will impact the design and layout of their product labels and packaging. Many companies have likely already updated their labels and packaging, but, for those that have not, time is now to get in compliance.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are three significant changes to the new nutritional fact panel to be aware of and understand:

·Limiting added sugars – the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends adults eat less than 9 teaspoons of added sugar per day. Currently, Americans eat more than 17 teaspoons on average per day. The new NFP defines these added sugars for each product.

·Limiting unhealthy fats – along with the amount of fats people eat is the type of fats they eat. The NFP will define how much of each type so consumers know what they are buying.

·Encouraging needed nutrients – when the NFP was created in 1994, vitamin A and C were included to encourage consumption of those nutrients; now the FDA judges Americans are ok there, but need to consume more vitamin D and Potassium in their diets.

There are multiple versions of the new nutritional fact panel label depending on the shape, size and type of the product design and packaging. Choosing between tabular, vertical, linear or dual column display is important to fit within the current overall design and packaging for the product and to minimize re-design efforts and cost to comply with the new requirements.
